With the new decade comes new opportunity for fraud. While not as widespread as the Y2K fear, the rumors of fraud with dating checks or documents with “20” instead of “2020” is one worth familiarizing yourself with.
Let’s say you are writing a check to a rogue dog sitter and date the check 1/15/20 and he cashes the check. He keeps the check and next year in January 2021 he conveniently fills in “1/15/2021” and cashes it again. Besides finding a new dog sitter, you now have a headache on your hands. While the likelihood of this is slim and the fraud is very easy to prove, it still could cause a lot of wasted time and aggravation which could be avoided by writing 2020.
